Hi,

We are using Oracle 8i with Devloper 6i on XP.
We are planning to move to Oracle 9i and to Developer 9i.
I believe upgrading Oracle 8i to Oracle 9i is not a problem. Is this true? What problems can we face here?

Also can we use Developer 6i with oracle 9i?

I believe the tool Flint can be used to convert froms/reports from Devleoper 6i to Developer 9i. How dependable is the tool?

Thanks & Regards,
Shailaja

It is easier to upgrade Oracle 8i to 10g than to 9i as Oracle supplied an upgrade script in 10g. If you use 9i you have to export and import, and if you used the internal userid in any of your tables you will have to update their value after the import as the internal userid will be different after the import.

Yes you can use Forms 6i with Oracle 9i.

I have never heard of Flint. Basically, don't waste your money. Convert the object libraries, then the pll libraries making sure that you have no cyclic calls (a.pll calls b.pll and then b.pll calls a.ppl) as 9i doesn't handle it (it is also very bad coding practice). Then do the menus and finally use the batch program to convert the PL/SQl that is contained in the forms.

Look at the migration tool link in http://www.orafaq.com/forum/t/48207/67467/ from Steve Callan.

Hi David,

Thanks for the reply.
Basically we are on Developer 6i & Oracle 8i.
If upgrading from Oracle 8i to 10 g is more easier, does Developer 6i work with Oracle 10g?(The reason I am asking this question is we can upgrade oracle 8i to Oracle 10g as soon as possible and start looking at upgrading Dveloper 6i to 9i later because I believe that takes a lot of time).

Shailaja

Forms 6i will work with 10g. Conversion from 6i to 10g may be a simple as open, compile, generate, then run. But then again, if your system was build using 6.0 Designer generator and has been updated by 15 people over 5 years with major changes and cyclic routine calls in your ten to twelve plls then it will take a bit of time.

David,

Thanks for the information.
I have got a question about Oracle 10g now. I am not sure if I can ask about it in this forum.
Our database server is on 8i now. Now if I want load Oracle 10g on this server, can we do that using only this server. Or do we need multiple servers? If we can use only one server, is it going to be effiicent?

Regards,
Shailaja

I am not an expert on database topics. However, as long as the server satisfies the requirements for 10g then I see no reason why you can't have both installed at the same time.

I assume that you will be moving the 8 data to the 10 database and then ultimately dropping the 8 environment.

You may have some resource limitations if you try to run everyone on both systems at the same time, but that would happen if you tried to run two 8 databases on the same hardware at the same time.

Try it and see. Remember that an 8 database can be upgraded to 10, you don't have to export and then import the data into the new 10 database.

Thanks for the reply.
Can you please tell me the server requirements for 10g ?
I tried to search Oracle site but couldn't find it? Do you know if it is listed on the oracle site?

Shailaja

Disk requirements are at http://download-west.oracle.com/docs/html/B13693_02/pre_require.htm#sthref126 but server requirements depend on the number of users.

How many people do you want accessing through a sinlge server? 10 - 50 - 100 - 150?

Hi,

Around 40-70 will be accessing from the same server.

Then you will need a reasonable size server.

This is MY opinion only, everyone else can give their experience, but about 1.5GHz of processing, single processor, maybe a dual, 2G RAM, standard disk. I suggest Linux (reboot weekly) but MS Server can probably handle it (reboot daily).
